Dealing with a toothache? Find out why root canal treatment may be necessary.

If you are noticing a nagging pain in a tooth, this isn’t something you should just ignore.

Pain is your mouth’s way of telling you that something is going wrong.

Why is root canal therapy necessary?

If you have a toothache, that means that  your dental pulp is maybe inflamed. The dental pulp is the structure that lies within the tooth that contains nerves. You can consider the pulp to be the feeling center of the tooth.

Decay, infection, and trauma can all lead to a damaged dental pulp. Once the pulp has become infected or inflamed it will need to be removed. Luckily, the pulp is not necessary for a tooth to remain functional.

The purpose of root canal treatment is to remove the inflamed or decayed dental pulp and to clean out the inside of the tooth where the infection lies.

What happens if you do not get a root canal?

If you decide to ignore the problem, then it will only continue to get worse until the tooth is so damaged that it cannot be repaired. Once this happens the tooth will need to be removed and then we will need to replace it with an artificial tooth. Isn’t it much easier, simpler, and cost-effective to prevent this from happening altogether and to just get a simple root canal? Reach out to our team to find out just how painless and effortless root canals can be.

We know there are a lot of horror stories out there about root canal treatments, but do not worry. We don’t want to see you in pain, and we know that a damaged dental pulp can certainly be severely painful. Don’t you want to relieve it? The only way to get rid of pain is through root canal therapy. The purpose of this procedure is to eliminate pain, not cause pain.

If this was not enough to calm your fears, also know that root canal treatment is performed after the tooth has been numbed, so you won’t feel a thing.

As the local anesthetic wears off after the root canal, you might experience mild pain and sensitivity which is related to the cleaning process.

During the cleaning process, we make a small opening in the crown of the tooth and clean out diseased pulp inside the pulp chamber of the tooth.

Any uncomfortable sensation following a root canal should only last a few days.

The tooth happens to be a really small organ . It contains the pulp which is barely a couple of millimeters in diameter. Root canal treatment (RCT) involves the removal of this fine piece of tissue.

So, if done with without microscope, there is a chance that some parts of the pulp will be left behind during removal.

When the same procedure is done with a microscope, the chances of leaving behind any tissue or canal is far lesser because the dentist can view the tooth in magnifications of up to 10 times that seen with the naked eye (10x).

So, the chances of failure of the root canal treatment are far less. The dental microscope is also of immense help in retreating previous defective root canal treatments, broken instruments, missed canals, ledges, perforations, old root canal fillings (Guetta Percha) all can be seen and manipulated easier with the dental microscope.

In modern dentistry, rubber dam use is considered essential. However, in the hands of inexpert doctors its application can be demanding on both the dentist and the patient. So, what is the rubber dam? And why do modern dentists use it?

A rubber dam is a thin square sheet, usually made from latex, that is used to isolate the working site (one or more teeth) from the rest of the mouth. The rubber dam is anchored around the crown of the tooth using a metal clamp to seal and secure the rubber dam sheet to the tooth or teeth that are receiving treatment during the dental procedure. The clamps come in a variety of shapes and sizes which suit the anatomy of the different teeth in the mouth. In modern day dentistry the rubber dam is considered essential, for many reasons.

First and foremost, putting the biggest risk in perspective, you are protected from the risk of ingestion, or worse, the aspiration of small instruments, dental fragments, irrigation solutions, or irritant substances.

Secondly it prevents the contamination of the working field from saliva, blood. Moisture contamination from mouth breathing can be a contaminant affecting the results of some dental restorations, so it allows dentists to deliver safely with more predictable results.

Another important reason is that you are more comfortable, as they you do not feel that your mouth is invaded by hands, instruments, and liquids.

Geriatric dentistry is the delivery of dental care to seniors. It involves the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of problems associated with normal ageing and age-related diseases as part of an interdisciplinary team with other health care professionals.

Dental care for geriatric patients has been increasing day by day, supported by the increasing life span of human generations. The treatment and diagnosis of a geriatric patient is challenging procedure, as these individuals might have both systemic and oral issues. Often oral manifestations are present which are the result of hidden systematic diseases that the patient may not be aware off. Your clinician can help you to detect and resolve these issues.

Ultra-dental care recommends to our beloved community and geriatric patients these 5 essential dental care steps:

1-A healthy and balanced diet is the key to an oral cavity and a body free form disease.

2- Do not eat sweet or sticky foods between meals as they are highly associated with caries development.

3- Regular brushing after each meal is mandatory to keep teeth free from plaque and resist decay.

4- Choose right toothbrush that fits comfortably in hand and is easy to control. Massage your gums with your fingers after brushing and gently brush your tongue too.

5-Visit our clinic regularly so our geriatric care team can monitor your oral health every 3 months.

Composite fillings or also known as Cosmetic White fillings are a dental filling material that is used for managing decayed and broken teeth, it was originally designed to be used for front teeth but nowadays it can be used for back teeth as a replacement to amalgam fillings (Silver fillings) which have multiple health concerns due to their mercury content.

Thanks to modern nanotechnology, composite fillings now can be used effectively in a conservative manner as it depends on adhesion to the tooth surface and that saves a lot of tooth structure compared to silver fillings if they were used, in addition it is safe to be used at any age.

Composite fillings are used for restoring decayed teeth, closing front gaps, and changing front teeth shape and color as it is a strong & highly aesthetic material. However, it should not be used to restore severely broken-down teeth, these are better covered with crowns.

There are a lot of brands and techniques for application of the cosmetic white fillings, at Ultra we make it our aim have the most recent techniques and technology for cosmetic fillings application

Please discuss with your dentist which type is better for you.

How many sessions do I need for an implant?

Usually implants take 2-3 sessions to be done, one for insertion which takes about 30 min, second for impression which takes about 30 min and the 3rd one for the crown or bridge fit.

Family dentists usually practice general dentistry for people of all ages, but a pediatric dentist spends all day every day treating only kids.

Here are few reasons to take your child to a specialist:

1.We are kid experts! We get an extra five to seven years of special training to treat children  from  infants to growing teens.

2.Did you know that our children waiting room looks more like a playground and an amusement center? Colorful murals decorate our walls. Toys and video games fill our play areas. It is where all the cool kids hang out!

3.Whether your child is super shy or super chatty, a specialist knows how to handle every personality that walks through the doors.

4.Worried about your child’s pacifier use, thumb sucking or bottle feeding? They can show you how to tame your child’s bad habits.

5.Baby teeth get cavities, too. A pediatric dentist is trained to work on tiny teeth.

6.Pediatric dentists show your child each instrument they use and explain what it does. It is our way of making dental visits entertaining and educational.

7.Pediatric specialists are also trained to treat kids with special needs.

8.We give away kid-friendly prizes at the end of each visit.

9.Pediatric dentists know how to make your child’s visit fun. Most of our patients cannot wait to come back. Imagine a child who wants to go to the dentist. Now that is something to smile about!

Your child’s first dental visit should take place sometime after the first tooth appears, but no later than the first birthday.

Why so early? As soon as your baby has teeth, he or she can get cavities. Being proactive about your child’s dental health today can help keep his or her smile healthy for life.

At this time, the dentist can give you information on:

  • Baby bottle tooth decay
  • Infant feeding practices
  • Mouth cleaning
  • Teething
  • Pacifier habits
  • Finger-sucking habits

Tips for a Great Visit

  • Do not schedule an appointment during naptime. Instead, pick a time your child is usually well-rested and cooperative.
  • Make sure your child has had a light meal and brushes their teeth before their appointment, so they won’t be hungry during their visit.
  • Save snacks for after the visit so they are not on your child’s teeth during the exam.
  • Think of the appointment as a happy and fun experience. If your child becomes upset during the visit, work with your dentist to calm your child. You are on the same team!

Is your child afraid of dental visits? If we want our children to be healthy, keeping their teeth clean and cavity free is an important part of that.

However, dental visits can be challenging if your child gets anxiety at the very mention of a dental appointment.

So how can we help them calm those fears and even look forward to a dental visit? Here are a few helpful tips to help your child’s next dental visit go a little more smoothly.

Choose an Experienced Pediatric Dentist

The first tip is a simple one. Pediatric dentists have two or three years of additional academic training on top of their years in dental school that train them how to treat children and their fears.

These dentists usually have kid friendly offices with prizes or treats for kids who successfully sit through a dental appointment, and even sunglasses to help dim the brightness of overhead exam lights. They may even have fluffy stuffed animals to comfort the kids during exams.

Have the First Dental Appointment Early

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, an excellent way to minimize anxiety for children is to start regular dental visits before a problem like a cavity develops.

Not only does starting early with dental appointments help your child to get used to the idea of seeing a dentist, but it also helps to minimize the chance of cavities forming early on. Finding cavities early means shorter appointments and fewer dental bills. Getting your child used to regular visits can really help avoid complex and expensive treatments later.

Stay Close During Your Child’s Dental Visits

Whenever going through a new or frightening experience, it can help to have a parent nearby with a hand to hold and a soothing voice. Some dentists may even allow the child to sit on a parent’s lap during some parts of the appointment. Your child will probably find the sound of your voice soothing and it may help to distract them from the dental work. However, many dentists recommend allowing the dentist to make small talk with the child during the appointment, as this will help them to develop trust and make future appointments easier.

Provide Distractions, Set Aside Your Fear and Provide Information

Some dental offices may have a TV overhead to play kid friendly shows or movies to keep kids distracted during their appointments. In other cases, you may be able to allow your child to wear headphones or earbuds to listen to their favorite music or movie.

Your child can sense if you are afraid or concerned, and it will be reflected in the way they feel. Avoid scary words like “pain,” “afraid,” or “worry,” to help your child not fear dental appointments and even look forward to them.

Hopefully, these tips will help make a difference in the way your child thinks about and experiences dental appointments for years to come and leads to a positive relationship both with their dentist and dental hygienist and dental care altogether.

General Anesthesia

To keep your child safe and comfortable during a dental procedure, your child’s dentist might decide to use general anesthesia. General anesthesia also may be used if your child needs extensive or complicated procedures that will take a long time to complete, or needs several procedures done all at the same time. General anesthesia makes your child’s whole body go to sleep. Your child will feel no pain during the procedure, nor have any memory of it.

Fast Facts About General Anesthesia

  • Your child’s dentist will recommend general anesthesia to perform dental treatments only if it is needed.
  • Your child will sleep through the procedure and have no memory of it.
  • When anesthesia is needed, there are special rules for eating and drinking at home before the procedure.
  • Your child will have some restrictions after the procedure.
  • You should plan to stay at the hospital for most of the day until the anesthesia has completely worn off and it is safe for your child to go home.

Home Preparation

When general anesthesia is needed, there are important rules for eating and drinking that must be followed in the hours before the procedure. Following are the usual instructions for eating and drinking. No matter what age your child is, you should follow the specific instructions given to you on the phone by the nurse.

For infants under 12 months:

  • Up to 6 hours before the scheduled arrival time, formula-fed babies may be given formula.
  • Up to 4 hours before the scheduled arrival time, breastfed babies may nurse.

For all children:

  • After midnight, the night before the procedure, do not give any solid food or non-clear liquids. That includes milk, formula, juices with pulp, coffee, and chewing gum or candy.
  • Up to 2 hours before the scheduled arrival time, give only clear liquids. Clear liquids include water, and juices you can see through, such as apple or white grape juice. Milk is not a clear liquid.
  • If your child takes daily medication, you may give it unless specifically told not to do so by your child’s doctor or the scheduling nurse.

Going to Sleep

  • Once your child has been registered for the procedure, a member of the anesthesia staff will meet with you to take your child’s vital signs, weight, and medical history. As the parent or legal guardian, you will be asked to sign a consent form before the anesthesia is given.

How to Comfort Your Child Before Induction

As a parent, watching your child undergo anesthesia may be a very uncomfortable experience for you. Children can sense a parent’s concern — so for your presence to be helpful to your child, you must try to be as calm and encouraging as possible. There are ways you can help your child, even if you feel uncomfortable.

  • You can bring along a “comfort” item — such as a favorite toy, stuffed animal or “blankie”— for your child to hold during the induction.
  • You can touch your child to remind your child that you are there. Holding your child’s hand or caressing his or her hair and face will remind your child of your presence.
  • You can whisper, talk, or sing to your child. The sound of your voice can provide reassurance.

Following General Anesthesia

Once the procedures have been completed, your child will be taken to the recovery room where nurses will carefully check his or her vital signs. The effects of general anesthesia can last for many hours.

  • Your child’s nose, mouth, and throat may remain numb for 30 to 45 minutes after the procedure.
  • Your child’s throat may remain slightly sore for 1 to 2 days after general anesthesia.
  • Your child’s gums and mouth may be sore for several days afterward, depending on the dental procedure.
  • Use caution when your child eats and drinks for about 30 to 40 minutes after the procedure.
  • Your child may feel dizzy or feel like vomiting.
  • Give your child only soft foods for the first few hours after undergoing anesthesia.

At-Home Care and Follow-Up Visits

  • Your child is not to return to school or day care that day, and you may need to see how he or she feels the next day. Sometimes the effects from general anesthesia — usually tiredness — can last into the next day. Your child will need to remain at home where an adult can monitor him or her.
  • Upon returning home, your child may only have minimal activity for the remainder of the day.
  • Your dentist will tell you when you should schedule a follow-up visit.

When to Call the Dentist

If your child’s gums are sensitive, Tylenol® or Motrin® will help with any discomfort. If your child experiences the following for more than 24 hours following dental surgery done with anesthesia in the operating room, you should call the dentist: Fever, severe bleeding of the gums, severe pain, severe vomiting, or dizziness. If your child has any of these symptoms, call your dentist immediately.
